<trans-abstract xml:lang="en"><p>The article makes an attempt to investigate the evolvement of geopolitics by searching for the sources of shaping the existing paradigmatic schools. Following the discussion of methodological synthesis, it proposes a hypothesis of the stages of the influence of space on politics, which embraces positivist and post-positivist ideas. The examples from nation-building and centre-periphery relations substantiate the hypothesis.</p></trans-abstract><kwd-group xml:lang="ru"><kwd>критическая геополитика</kwd><kwd>постпозитивизм</kwd><kwd>национальное строительство</kwd><kwd>столицы</kwd><kwd>методологический синтез</kwd><kwd>critical geopolitics</kwd><kwd>post-positivism</kwd><kwd>nation-building</kwd><kwd>capitals</kwd><kwd>methodological synthesis</kwd></kwd-group></article-meta></front><back><ref-list><title>References</title><ref id="cit1"><label>1</label><citation-alternatives><mixed-citation xml:lang="ru">Казанцев А.А. - 2009. - № 4. - С. 88-114.</mixed-citation><mixed-citation xml:lang="en">Казанцев А.А.
