Автор исходит из понимания феномена терроризма как явления системного характера, в основе которого лежит комплекс взаимообусловленных и дополняющих друг друга переменных. Одной из них является сочетание исторического и культурного фонов общества, или системы с факторами среды (социальной, экономической и политической): определенное сочетание этих факторов, свойственных периоду модернизации второй половины XX и начала XXI в., приводит к формированию значительного числа десоциализированных индивидуумов, испытывающих острую релятивную депривацию и выражающих ее через крайние формы девиантного поведения. На широком фактическом материале 1960-2010-х годов автор демонстрирует, каким образом модернизация и сопровождающее ее разрушение экономических, политических и социальных институтов, свойственных традиционным обществам, способствуют распространению террористических идей и формированию паттернов террористического поведения.

The author understands the terrorism as a complex phenomenon, based on interconnected factors, which can be understood at different levels of analysis. In the article the societal level of analysis is used to explain terrorism through the historical development and cultural background of the society which is viewed as a large and complex system, including its political, social and economic environments as well as its historic development as it undergoes the modernization process. The author tries to identify casual relationship between features of a distinct society and the occurrence of terrorism in that society.
